It's always exciting for me to be able to interview and feature talented artists on my blog. This month's featured artist is the creative and adorable Lindsay Emery of Suite One Studio. Her pottery is dreamy, and she is definitely someone I would be friends with "in real life". Lindsay is also a member of The Artisan's Gallery Team, and I fell in love with her shop the first time I saw it.

Tell me a little about yourself:

My name is Lindsay Emery and I am the artist behind Suite One Studio, a handmade porcelain pottery line. I have been making pottery for the last six years, basically non-stop. I originally attended college to pursue my interest in visual arts, focusing at the time on 2-Dimensional works. I have always wanted to be an artist, since early childhood. There was never any question that I would spend my life creating and living passionately in pursuit of art.

Throughout my earlier years of education I took art classes in any media I could. I carried a sketchbook in my backpack all through High School, always drawing. My love of lines carried me to college to study drawing which then led into printmaking and painting. While working on my Fine Arts degree I was required to take a Ceramics class. I was not pleased. I had taken a ceramics class in High School and to my complete disappointment we only made pinch pots, ash trays and slip cast Christmas Trees, and that was only when we were not working on our semester long Papier-mâché project. I imagined this nonsense was now to to be continued at $300 per credit hour.

My first day of ceramics I maintained an outward air of complete disinterest. However, on the inside I could feel something stirring. The studio was messy in a way no other room in the Art Building was. And to my surprise this appealed to me. There was life in this room. People worked here. There was something passionate to me about the dusty shelves and the unapologetic lumpiness of unsophisticated beginner work. Making a pile of dirt appear refined was hard to do, and while people were obviously trying not many were succeeding; Yet, there was a peculiar confidence to the imperfections. These novice projects were challenging to their creators, who sat on tall stools with their faces contorted in their extreme focus. There was something altogether wonderfully childlike about this room. I could feel this art in my heart.

That was when I knew I had finally found my medium. Start to finish I could feel passionate about clay, and for me passion is life. Sitting here now in my studio six years later surrounded by dust, clay, drying pots, glazed pots, and muddy water I see a room filled with life, activity and love. I can not imagine my life without clay.

Tell me about your process when beginning new pieces?

I always have a million ideas floating around in my mind for new bowls, fun curvy shapes and bright glazes to try out. Admittedly I don't use a sketchbook as often as I should anymore. But, I rarely find myself with a lack of ideas. Its usually quite the opposite- too many ideas and not enough time. I guess a sketchbook would help with those moments too.. but, this current method of storing the ideas in my mind seems to work just fine, for now anyways.

With that said, I work fairly spontaneously when I sit down at my wheel. I usually decide ahead of time what type of form I will be working on, though I don't focus on any other details. I look at the clay and think “You will be a bowl.” And, I make a bowl. Some days are spent entirely on bowls, while other days each piece I make seems distinctly unrelated to the others I made that day. To start my process I buy my clay and wedge it on a canvas table to remove the air bubbles. This is a lot like kneading dough. Then I take my ball of clay to my wheel and play with the spinning momentum. For my bowls I like to stretch or alter the rims to add a more organic asymmetrical finish, which I feel adds to the handmade aesthetic.

In comparison my vases are meticulously even. I try to make these as close to perfectly symmetrical as possible. I like toying with the notion of traditional pottery, and disproving misconceptions that all pottery is clunky, uneven and heavy. My pieces are light, delicate yet still incredibly durable for everyday use. Creating by hand forms that have the sense of mass production is for me a fun way to practice the skills I have attained through careful repetition and endless dedication.

I make my own glazes, so once a week I spend an entire day mixing up new formulas. I have a few go-to glazes I always have stocked in my studio, such as my aqua, yellow and pink. Many of the other colors I make as I work. At the moment I have been working on developing a new chartreuse and a new purple glaze. The trial and error of this process is exhilarating.

When I first began mixing glazes it was to my initial surprise to learn that the results of the glaze's surface are entirely based in chemistry. I've found myself pretty adept at understanding complex molecular formulas that I never would have imagine I would. I remember rolling my eyes through Chemistry in High School completely certain I would never need to remember that Fe meant Iron, and that I could just say “Iron” for Iron happily my entirely life. Funny how things work out. Now, mixing glazes is one of my favorite parts of the handmade process. I will never touch a commercial glaze again. I love that creating my own glazes involves me even further in the creative process of each handmade porcelain pot.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)

In the last year I have made the transition to full-time artist. This was a very gradual transition for me. A year ago I was teaching private pottery and painting lessons at an art studio part-time, waittressing part-time and running my Etsy shop: http://www.suiteonestudio.etsy.com. I felt like I was being pulled in a million different directions. And, I knew I only wanted to give in to one of them. The six months I spent juggling everything is in my memory a very dark and blurry time. I was overwhelmed and overworked. But, for me every bit of the unpleasantness had to happen because it forced me to stand confidently on my decision and step forward with assertive direction. I was determined to make the shift to art full-time. I now work from my home studio and support myself entirely from my pottery.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.

Yes, well sort of. Basically I am slowly deconstructing my house with my overflow of pottery. I had my wheel in my bedroom for a while, but have now taken over my dining room. My dining table is now disassembled up in my attic and I have a work table and wheel in this "studio" room. I do all my glazing in my kitchen. Once a week you can't even find my stove, the room is so filled with pots and glaze chemistry supplies. My attached garage has two large work table and pots covering them and the most of the floor. I wrap all my orders and pack in my living room. I fire my kiln in my basement. My home studio is really just that!

What is your main inspiration?

My inspiration is a fusion of a few basic principals. I love nature and am inspired by the natural world, so I work with soft organic shapes. I also have a strong attraction to bright colors, in part an influence of the natural environment as well but also influenced by our modern world which is so heavily concentrated in rich, bold inks and pigments.

I love to spend time at home, and creating a liveable space that is aesthetically pleasing while still feeling used and loved is important to me. I aim to infuse this same idea into my work. My pieces are intended for daily use and daily appreciation. Brightly colored vases are designed to add a pop of color and a warm smile to any room, while my bowls are made to bring the family together and add a special touch to any meal. We need objects in our lives, just as humans always have. My pieces are designed to reflect us; all of us in this modern moment, and the things we value.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?

In five years I hope to be just a little further down this path. I would love to expand my operations and eventually have my own studio which could also serve as a small boutique. My kiln will probably need to be upgraded by that point, as I am already firing it almost every other day to keep up with my production. I am thrilled to be busy, and hope only for more of what I am already fortunate enough to have.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist

Stick with it. If you know you want to be an artist, do it. Each and every person's journey is different, but I am confident that those who pursue their dreams with every ounce of their being will find it. And, there is no better way to live, than to live your dream.

Summer Break!

I announced on my Facebook Page that I would be putting my shop on "Vacation Mode" for the whole month of June. Everyone has been very interested and curious as to WHY I would do that. It's definitely unusual to take a month off from your job. I thought I would explain here as to why I am closing up shop for the month of June.

First of all, like most people, Nathan gets 2 weeks of vacation time each year. Unlike most jobs, he has to take his 2 weeks of vacation consecutively. That means this is his only vacation time for the entire year, and I don't want to be working the entire time he is off. We are going camping for part of that time, and are really looking forward to that! We haven't been on any sort of vacation for a year.

At the end of the month, my mom and I are going out of time to visit my sister and her family for a week, yay!

Needless to say, I won't be home for most of the month. During the days I am home, I will be working hard to create lots of new goodies for the shop!

10 Reasons I Love Working For Myself

I love being self-employed and working from home.

Although I am with most other entrepreneurs out there (working twice as much for half the pay), I wouldn't have it any other way.

10 (of the many) reasons I love being self employed (and specifically working from home):

1. It saves big time on gas.

2. I can run my errands when other people are at work. Though occasionally the store will be really crowded in the middle of the day and I think, "Don't these people have jobs??"

3. No one cares that I am wearing the same jeans since November.

4. Pandora.

5. Pajamas.

6. Bare feet.

7. Cool boss.

8. Swimming is my exercise of choice, and I am able to do that in the morning without worrying about going to work with wet hair. (Because I don't own a blowdryer).

9. Freedom/Control/Creativity.

10. I get to bring my dog to work with me every day!

I've "known" Caroline from Peaseblossom Studio for a while now. We met ages ago in the twitter/etsy circle, and I've always admired her shop as well as her sweet personality. I've been coveting a handmade leather journal from her shop for quite a while, and I finally got Nathan one for Valentine's Day. It's beautiful! The leather is so creamy soft, and the whole journal is so well constructed.

Caroline and I are on The Artisans Gallery Team together, and I know I will be frequenting her shop whenever I need an affordable, sturdy leather journal.

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?

In interior design school. I excelled in all the projects that involved making things, and I found I liked actually making things more than looking at wallpaper sample after wallpaper sample. From that point on, I knew I wanted to make things for a living.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)

I don't quite support myself yet, but it is definitely my vocation! I am a part time nanny to my beautiful niece and goddaughter, which supplements my income from my art.

Tell me about your process when starting a new creation.

I usually spend a lot of time looking at new colors of leather or going through my existing paper supply (of which I have quite a bit!). I will find something new or something I forgot I had and that will send me in a new direction. I spend A LOT of time thinking about new products.

I know you dabble in other art. Do you have a favorite painting you have done?

I do! Even though I do not sell my paintings, I have a few I love. One is a folk art style watercolor of an apple orchard and barn that hangs in my kitchen in a very old vintage frame. The colors are bright and happy and I see it every day and remember back to when I painted it right out of college when I loved art, but had no idea that I would "grow up" to be an artist.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.

My studio is located along one wall of my bedroom. It's a constant quest to improve the efficiency of it. Next on my list, a longer worktable. The colors match my entire room, which is sort of Ernest Hemingway meets preppy beach girl. I have a bulletin board over my desk, with all sorts of notes, small pieces of art I have bought, and other things from fellow artists that make me smile.

What is your main inspiration?

All the beautiful things of this world. I love describing the colors used in my work in terms of nature.

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?

There are two--Van Gogh and Monet. I am not a painter but I find myself wanting to pull out a certain color from a painting for my inspiration.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years

-Where will you be and what will you be doing?

I will be doing the same thing! My dream would be to be known as a lifestyle brand of the handmade journal world. The next Martha, perhaps? :)

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?

There is so much! I have been so lucky to have many mentors and encouragers along the way. I would have to way the best piece of advice I have received is to persevere.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?

My best advice is to be yourself. Really! There will be things that only you can excel at. Those are the things you should be doing!

Happy Thursday!

I want to introduce my husband and my new shop on etsy, Mr. Moss!

Nathan does all the sewing, and I do most of the computer stuff. So far it's been great! Nathan loves making the ties, and he started selling almost immediately. Because he has a full time job, including most Saturdays, he limited time to work on the ties. It's too bad we can't both be full-time artists and makers.

All our ties are made from upcycled fabrics, mostly vintage clothing. I must say, they look pretty dapper!

Prices are right around $25.

About a year ago I discovered Paulo Mendes's "Postalguarelas" and immediately fell in love with his artwork. I knew I would own one of his paintings one day. I am a sucker for paintings that portray real life, every day activities, especially when they include dogs and/or cats, tiny houses, watermelons, clothes on a clothesline, and the combination of any or all of the above. Paulo is a wonderfully talented, imaginative artist from Portugal.

I hope you are as inspired by this interview as I was.

Tell me a little about yourself:
I could be labeled as an introvert: I have a simple life, don't see many people in a normal day, like to be undisturbed in my corner; I'm a big saver of the spoken word, and run from social events like the devil from the cross. Apart from this, I'm a normal 45y.o. guy with its passions, expectations, joys and disappointments. I try to live one day at a time in the most down-to-earth and positive way as possible, overcoming occasional clouds and storms. In general, I cannot complain how life treated me so far, quite the contrary.

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?
Never had a point from which recognized myself as an artist, because I liked to draw since child and spent much time doing it, so it was something natural since ever. Always received much encouragement from people around me, and had all the opportunities anyone would dream, including in what concerns to studies, which did not stop me from wasting them, because I've never been a good student, always had some kind of disorder on keeping attention and focus, as well as a huge tendency to want things my way, with all the entailed defects.

What is your favorite medium?
I really like my current combination of sharp-pencil and watercolor, it's how I feel better working; It's very pleasant in terms of "tactile sensations", and is also what allows me to have more quick results, because I'm not very patient and dislike lengthy preparations or staying too long around the same work. It's curious that until very recently I did not like working with pencil, something that is changing with my daily sketches, the ones that later become watercolors. Sometimes I enjoy the spontaneity of those pencil sketches much more than the rigid final work in watercolor, and despite not knowing how the future will be, I think it would be a must if I could gather the qualities of both in the final result.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)
It has already filled some shopping carts, but not enough to live exclusively on it. Sure I wish it would, but to be honest I doubt if that will happen anytime: I live modestly but free from significant financial pressures like kids to grow or big mortgages, so I can afford a non-professional and carefree approach to my work that would cause creeps to any “learn-to-sell-your-art” guru: I decided to work only on my own ideas, no longer accepting commissions or deadlines. My art is probably my biggest pleasure in life, and I know from experience that if one of those stress factors comes into play, the pleasure is killed and the final result compromised. We are not all equal, some people get along quite well that way, and that's wonderful, but doesn't work for me, so I prefer to sacrifice part of my time being "stuck" to other activity that helps me to pay the bills, provided it can keep my freedom and integrity on the art side. I'm not desperate for things to change, my immediate goal is to be happy with my next work: Things will happen when and if they have to happen.

Tell me about your process when starting a new painting?
It starts with a pencil sketch from memory and imagination. I try to make at least one or two everyday, so I always have dozens to choose from, there's always something to fit my mood. Then I re-draw it on a transparent paper with a fine pen, and re-draw it again in the reverse with a sharp pencil in order to transfer it to the watercolor paper by pressing with a hard object. Next step is to enhance the transferred lines with the same sharp-pencil, and this is when the work becomes more pleasant and starts taking its final shape. Everything is finally ready for the first colors, the last and most exciting stage. All this process could be done in one day, but is usually divided in more than one session, so a new work comes out every 3 or 4 days.

Do you have a favorite painting you have done?
I have several, so it would be difficult to name one in particular. They are not necessarily the most elaborate or time-consuming, actually is quite the opposite. Also they are not always the ones other people liked best, and I've been surprised after seeing works I really enjoyed to make not getting the acceptance of others with whom I'm not entirely happy... At the top of the “satisfaction pyramid” are those I call "happy paintings": They were born at the right time with the right inspiration, made at a glance and with an ease that one would say the only trouble they gave was to let the hand follow the brush. It isn't something that happens often.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.
My works are very small and that's an advantage when it comes to a working space, because they can be done almost everywhere. There's a corner in my little apartment that has plenty of light, especially in the morning, and that's where I have a desk bigger enough for my work, my laptop, and my cats... After dinner, all the stuff – cats included - is moved to my dining table, under the remaining bulbs of an old chandelier, where things can become very snug especially in the cold months, with my wife's company, a hot tea and the fireplace on.

What is your main inspiration?
My greatest inspiration is the countryside around the area I live, in Northern Portugal. Despite living in the city, I am fortunate to be a couple of hours drive from truly breathtaking places, seeming far from everything. There are mountain landscapes, incredible villages and vintner valleys of intoxicating beauty. I have a special fascination for the vernacular architecture of these villages, and their ancestral ways of life. Unfortunately, my country is being ruled by inhuman technocrats for whom all this means nothing: They look to the countryside as an obstacle to their tortuous notion of progress where you must save money by closing schools, medical posts, railways, and then plundering the resources by flooding with dams some valleys of a unique beauty and biodiversity. The villages are getting empty, unattended fields and forests burn like straw in Summer... The world that inspires me is not declining, it's being murdered at a breakneck and demential pace, and it's not unlikely that soon I'll have to rely on pictures and memories to get inspiration, or move elsewhere.

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?
My eyes rejoice with the works of many artists in many periods and styles, but I have to love especially all those who knew how to convey the beauty and intimacy of a rural courtyard, the grandness of a mountain or an horizon, the glorious light of a sunny day, the balanced complexity of a tree... They have been our “eyes” to a dreamworld that in many cases already does not exist. Three real favorites, each one with his own style, are Peder Mork Monsted, Carl Larsson and Isaac Levitan.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?
I don't have plans, my goal is to go bed tonight with no worries and the satisfaction of some work advancing well. But there are things I'd like to do in the future: I would like to learn, improve and overcome my actual countless limitations. There are lots of future works in my head I can't put on paper because still feeling unable to; Everything in a landscape, a village or a mountain top has a reason to be there, I would like it to make sense in my works. I would like to paint a recognizable tree, not just a "green meatball"; To paint the water of a stream and the labyrinth of foliage around it; To paint the clouds, the light of any time of the day, under any sort of weather; To summarize, I'd like to solve many visual equations around me. Maybe the best way to learn it is to pick up the material, go to places, draw them and learn from them... Plein air sketching and painting is something I never managed to do despite a few attempts, and failed so far to overcome this inexplicable block. Once done, I think it will be like opening a gate to a new wide world. Maybe could make this an important priority for the next five, fifteen or fifty years.

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?
I keep getting the most wonderful feedback and encouragement from my family, my friends, all the great fellow artists and visitors that take the time to see my work on the web, but the most priceless advice came almost 30 years ago from a dearest old teacher in high school that always insisted I should proceed with my Art studies. I didn't; “Too bad you didn't”, he keeps saying, shaking his head everytime we happen to meet in the street.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?
-Don't miss your chance to study if you're still in your teens: The most important decisions in your life have to be taken in your most silly age;
-Learn from everything, observe everything: a backyard can be more instructive than a cathedral;
-Enjoy and appreciate the work of your favorite artists, learn from them but don't try to be like them: Be yourself and let your own style take shape.
-Work to be happy, not to be rich or famous: Plant the wishes in your head by the right order, and rewards will flourish.
-Don't be discouraged by failure or frustration, happens to all: Some days will come in which nothing seems to work. It's just a storm that goes away, do something else until sunshine is back. -Work a lot, as much as you can, until it gives you so much pleasure that you could skip this advice;
-Accept and try to learn from the criticism of the constructive people; Accept and try to learn from the criticism of the destructive people, and then write their numbers in a public restroom. -Finally, adopt one or more cats: They will be happy to have a home, and you'll be happy for having the best of all companies during those long working hours, even if your watercolor box will be full of hair.

Studio Space

Like most crafty people,

I love seeing other people's studio spaces. I love seeing where artists work, and how they've organized their spaces to be functional and inspirational.

My studio is a constant work-in-process, but I thought I would share photos of where I spend most of my day. I was inspired to do a blog update about this after seeing Jennfunique's Craft Room Inspiration post as well as TilleyJewel's post portraying her creative use of space.

Above is a view of the whole room. I have 2 banquet tables along the wall as my work space separated into "necklace space" and "painting space".

My computer monitor is always handy so I can respond to emails, receive orders, and of course tweet.

Obviously I love boxes and compartments. These are the shelves above my necklace station. My cords and chains hang on the hooks, and the cigar boxes hold extra supplies like thank you notes, organza bags, business cards, etc. My mom made that cute little bird stuffed animal, and Nathan painted that avocado.

This is what I see right in front of me. All those compartments hold different supplies I need on a daily basis. Everything has it's own little space.

Here's a close up of part of the hutch. I have my business cards, stamps, post-it notes on the left. The Roi-Tan cigar box holds my organza bags, and the box underneath is full of blank thank-you notes.

To the left of my necklace station is where my shipping supplies are. I got that awesome wood box that holds the gift wrapping from RecycledBrooklyn, a fantastic etsy shop. What can I say, I'm a little obsessed with boxes and compartments.

My 3 most-used tools.

This is a little box that holds my paints. I used to collage boxes all the time, and this is one of the ones I held onto. Perfect size to hold some of my paints.

This is how I've easily organized my pendants. As soon as one size starts getting low, I refill it from one of the cigar boxes that holds the rest.

It is always a huge honor for me to feature other artists on my blog.

This particular artist is especially exciting for me because I have admired her work for years, and even own a print. [Some day I hope to own an original!] I first discovered Ali Cavanaugh on Daily Painters and immediately fell in love with her talent. The way she captures light is impeccable, and anyone who can paint the human form as well as she does has some serious talent. It's not that her paintings look like photographs:

They look BETTER than photographs.

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?
I remember my talent being affirmed early in elementary school. My teachers would ask me to use my artistic abilities on their bulletin boards or if any illustration needed to be done. I specifically remember a yearbook cover competition for my elementary school yearbook. I wanted to win so bad….I was disappointed when I lost to a 6th grader …I was in 3rd grade at the time. I remember thinking “I’ve got to work harder!”

What is your favorite medium?
My favorite medium is watercolor for sure. I’ve tried everything under the sun…even medium that is not categorized as art material. It seems that watercolor is the best medium for translating my artistic voice. It does exactly what I want it to do. I was an oil painter for 15 years and I really love oil…. the vibrant luminosity that it holds, but it just doesn’t work for me.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)
Yes, I do support myself with my art sales. I don’t live an extravagant life or anything, but I am able to pay the bills. I view my vocation as family. I look at life through the lens of eternity and I know that I will be judged on my faithfulness as a wife and mother, not how many paintings I produced or how successful my art career was.

Tell me about your process when starting a new painting?
I have several phases or layers in producing my work. First and foremost I view my work as an entrance into the mystery of thought and contemplation, human existence, and the complexity of the human conscience. With this platform in mind I photograph my figures in times of isolation. The solidarity produces a feeling of transience. I like to emphasis these contemplative moments by placing the figure in direct light. I have catalogued thousands and thousands of photographs. Some series will never be painted and other series I seem to return to over and over as I try to master a certain light or texture of fabric.

Do you have a favorite painting you have done?
A collector asked me this question a few months ago. It is hard for me to pick one favorite painting. I have several that I feel are monumental in my growth as an artist. I call these ‘breakthrough paintings” either I discovered a new technique or expounded deeper into a concept.
My most recent favorite that I actually decided to keep for my own private collection is a simple profile study of my daughter. She is my muse and is the model for about 80% of my work. I recently painted an academic, not conceptual, piece that will be featured in a step by step demonstration in Artist’s Magazine early next year.

In this painting I pushed the lighting on the figure and discovered beauty in the reflective objects.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.
My workspace is very simple, a room in my home. Since I have three children, one being a 6 month old I have to keep my space kid friendly and very accessible.

What is your main inspiration?
I have a multi-faceted source of inspiration: devotion to the Blessed Mother, re-experiencing my own childhood through the experience of mothering my daughter, and my own spiritual development in the way that is it always refining who I am.

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?
My favorite artists and the artists that I believe influenced me the most are Andy Warhol, Alex Kats, Ingres, and Andrew Wyeth.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?
This past year has been a big one for me. I had a baby at 36; just one month after my husband was diagnosed with cancer. I have come to realize that it is good to take one day at a time and enjoy the moment. I try to put my all into each week and not put too much weight on long term goals. Goals are good things, but the journey is more important.

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?
Know yourself.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?
Prioritize your life
Be humble and accept criticism
Work extremely hard and
Know yourself

Dog Collar Review

I love my dog.

I'm sure this is no surprise, I mean if my blog posts aren't about my artwork, they are about my Bull Terrier Margot. Too many times I have gone to Target and come home with more stuff for Margot than for me. She is definitely "The Target Dog". But that's besides the point.

I recently met an awesome gal Jacki on etsy who makes and sells dog collars. I immediately fell in love with her collars (I admit, partly because her model is 1/2 Bull Terrier). She happen to like my necklaces too, and we traded a Custom Hand Painted Necklace with her 2 dogs, for 2 collars of my choice. What a deal!

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?
My joy and obsession have always been found in making things. When I was a kid, my hands were always busy constructing or assembling something, whether it was out of cardboard, plastic model parts, origami paper, or Lego building blocks. It’s what came naturally to me, and it’s what I loved to do. I didn’t start painting representational work, however, until about 5 and half years ago. I guess it wasn’t until then that I realized that there was something to my passion for making things. I think many people think I’ve been painting for a lot longer, but maybe that’s because it was something always inside of me.

Tell me about your process when starting a new painting?
I try to keep my approach simple. Painting is just so very complex that if I don’t keep it simple, I’ll drive myself nuts -- it’s just like life. After deciding on a subject, whether it’s a still life, portrait, figure, or landscape, I make several thumbnail sketches in my sketchbook to help me work out a composition. Then, I just dig right in and block the painting in, filling the entire canvas as quickly as I can. After that, it’s just a matter of adjusting relationships and building the painting. I remind myself that all I’m doing is painting light and shadow.

Do you have a favorite painting you have done?
I have a few. Woman Don’t Cry and Cradle, which are both monochromatic nudes, are favorites. My still life Oranges in a Green Bowl is another favorite. I like my landscape Structures too. I guess what makes them favorites is that I feel I really accomplished what I set out to do in each of them and that they are all fully “me” in expression.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.
My “studio” is a small bedroom in my house. Georgio Morandi also worked in a small room in his home. There’s barely enough room to set up my easel, set up a still life, and store my work. My basement is my workshop, where I make my own frames and prepare supports for painting. I usually do my drawing in the basement too, since I don’t want charcoal dust and graphite powder all over my small studio space.

What do you do on a regular basis that keeps you inspired? What is your main inspiration?
I’m inspired when I look at the beautiful work of other artists. It keeps me thinking about what it is that I want to do in my own work. My main inspiration, however, is light -- light reflecting off everything around me.

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?
My hero is Georgio Morandi. His work is so incredibly sensitive. It touches me in a way no other artist’s does.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?
I would like to have a larger studio, to sell more work and to teach. I have no idea where I’ll be in 5 years. Only God knows.

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?
In her book The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron says that sometimes it’s more audacity than talent that makes one an artist.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?
Be certain that it’s what you were born to do and strive to reveal your own voice.

Evelyn is one of my "Twitter Pals" and I am so happy I discovered her. She is talented, creative, kind, inspirational, and has a wonderfully interesting life! Keep reading to learn about how circuses, sharks, and trailers have brought her to where she is today.

Tell me a little about yourself:
I am originally from southern New Jersey. Before moving back down to Florida, I lived in Wilmington, DE and quiet honestly would move back there in a heartbeat! I attended the University of Delaware for two years and then ran away and joined the circus...no really, I did. I travelled with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey in the U.S. for two years. Started with selling cotton candy but then convinced management that they needed an artist to take care of props and floats. That was my first job as an artist. I worked for their prop shop Hagenbeck Wallace in Sarasota FL for two years then went with a unit of the circus to tour Japan for one year.

I returned to my family up north and worked retail for 15 years mostly with the Disney stores. In 2003 my closest friend of 17 years, who I mostly talked to on the phone, and maybe spent about two weeks in his physical presence over that span of time asked me to marry him. We had met when we were both in the circus, just not on the same shows. My relationship with Philip has been one of the best things in my life.

I am now able to be an artist full time and have just recently focused on presenting my work to the public. I manage our two businesses: a traveling live shark show and a plant nursery. Life is very full and never boring.

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?
I was fortunate to have supportive parents, odd at that time, most adults did not and many still do not look at art as a career. I started drawing very young, around five and my first drawing to hit the refrigerator was of a bowl of fruit on our dining room table. I still have a piece I drew for my Grandfather that he framed, it is hanging right behind my desk.

What is your favorite medium?
I work almost entirely in oils, but I would have to say I love charcoal the best, the dramatic effects you get with charcoal I cannot find anywhere else.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)
I am starting to support myself with my work. I was lucky to have had jobs where art was my job, but I did not create what I wanted.

Tell me about your process when starting a new painting?
I think about it a lot and am always afraid to start. I never believe it is going to turn out how I see it, so there is lots of procrastination. Then all of a sudden, I just storm into the studio and start. Depending on what the subject is, I will draw it out on the canvass, very loose. I usually work on a fairly dark ground and I like to use pthalo blue pigment to sketch it in, I like the way it combines with whatever I put down next. I always work wet into wet and get lost if the paint dries before I want it to. I work pretty fast, a result of having worked with the circus where everything had to be done quickly so it was dry for the next show!

Do you have a favorite painting you have done?
My favorite painting is one I did when I was 18. It was the first time I thought up my subject on my own, I did not work from an image, just my mind's eye. It was the first time I really felt like an artist.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.
I just moved into a new studio space. My husband converted our old 40-foot travel trailer we used when I was on the road with him and the shark show. He built a deck on the front and put down cork floors inside. It has a full kitchen and all that kind of stuff. It is kind of like a small apartment, I love it!

What do you do on a regular basis that keeps you inspired? What is your main inspiration?
It sounds somewhat corny but my husband is my main inspiration. I have never had someone who so genuinely believes in me and supports what I do. Although sometimes it feels like pressure, I really do owe it to him that I have developed as much as I have. The fact that he has given me this opportunity to do what I want spurs me on to not let myself and him down.

When it all gets to be too much I walk in the woods. I am very lucky to live five miles from a Myakka State Park.

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?
It is a little cliché, but I have to say Georgia O'Keefe has most influenced me. I find her work amazing and the person she was inspiring. She was a person who liked to be alone and thrived on it, I'm very much the same way. The photographer Diane Arbus was and still is a strong influence concerning subject matter. Her attempts to push the boundaries of what was accepted as normal always spoke to me and were a very strong influence on why I joined the circus.

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?
I have never really had any goals. I know that is a little strange, but I just have not. I have always tried to make the most out of the moment and place I am right now. When I was young and adults asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said "free." It got a strange reaction and usually nothing was said, which confirmed to me that it was a good answer! Considering the life I've lead so far I think the lack of goals has really given me a great deal of freedom with wonderful results!

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?
This is your hardest question! I'm not sure I've ever gotten any specific great advice. I think what I have felt at times is a trust from others that I actually was an artist. When others believed in me, it was really the best advice I received.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?
Considering I feel like I haven't gotten any specific advice this is a little tough. I think the advice I would give applies to every part of life, not just art.
Do not give up on yourself and ensure you are surrounded with the best people you know. The people that will always be there for you. Life is just too complicated to be with people who do not bring out the best in you. You are what you surround yourself with. Never underestimate the effect you can have on others. We have many acquaintances in life but very few true friends. If you are lucky enough to have them, they will give you all the support you will ever need. Art is a talent, but it is also a skill. The one thing that makes your skills better is practice. Remember that most of what you create will not be seen by anyone. Only a few people will appreciate it. Nevertheless, every single piece is a part of the process. Make steady and consistent the process and wonderful things will happen.

I did another LARGE-Statement-Piece-Double-Sided-Necklaces the other day. I actually like it quite a bit. One side is for when you're feeling colorful and whimsical, and the other side is for when you are feeling more glam. Both sides are for when you are feeling beachy!

Happy Wednesday!

Yesterday I got an eagerly awaited package. 15 new pendants! I opened them to discover beautiful square silver lockets with glass on either side, in which I could put a double sided painting. I absolutely love the idea of the glass, and the double sided possibilities. As soon as I removed the packing peanuts, chased Margot, threw away half eaten packing peanuts, and cut open the cardboard and bubble wrap carefully protecting each pendant, I realized I should have measured out the dimensions before ordering. 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches is a lot bigger than you might think. The other square pendants I have are an inch by an inch. Wow, that 1/2 inch on either side sure makes a difference. Not only in size, but in the possibility of what I can paint on there! I could easily fit 4 or 5 dogs (on each side), instead of 1 or 2! Yet on the other hand, will enough people want to wear this size to make it worth my while to offer it as an option? I think so. Here are some pictures of the new pendant. Please let me know what you think!

Here is a photo with a longer cord. Please keep in mind everyone has their own "perfect length" depending on width of neck, size of bosom, etc. When I sell my necklaces, I'm selling the painting. I expect (and suggest) that many buyers will put the pendant on their own chain of choice.

I Love Bull Terriers

As many of you know, I love Bull Terriers. When I'm driving and see one being walked down the street, I am known to make screeching halts, or abrupt and (illegal) U-turns so I can jump out and say hi. Bull Terrier owners never think I'm weird. They all understand because they do the same thing when they are driving.

I believe my love for Bull Terriers started when I was little and read the book "Boodil, My Dog" by Pija Lindenbaum.

Today my friend gave me a Bull Terriers Pet Manuel book by Carolyn Alexander, Barrons Publishing. There was a wonderful quote from it that I had to share. People who know or have ever owned a Bull Terrier will truly appreciate it:

"The Bull Terrier has a curious persona that includes the occasional dance of joy, when he sprints about the house or yard in complete abandon and then suddenly stops and grins. Some call these maneuvers 'Bully Runs' and they are remarkable for their intensity, short duration, and lack of damage caused. Many will seem to lightly prance when a tablecloth or branch of a bush brushes their backs as they walk under it. The Bull Terrier is a dynamo and a darling. Most play like a tomboy one minute and next they are gathering up the softest pillows for a nap."

Or, as John Steinbeck so aptly put:

"I have owned all kinds of dogs, but there is one kind I've always wanted and never had. I wonder if he still exists. His muzzle was pointed and his eyes triangular, so his expression was that of cynical laughter. He was friendly and not quarrelsome but forced into a fight he was very good at it. When I first discovered Camille Engel I fell in love with her art, especially her animal paintings. She captures the quirkiness of the birds perfectly, and the faces of her dogs have such amazing personality. I was honored when she agreed to be featured as December's Featured Artist here on my blog. I learned a lot from her thoughtful answers and I hope you will be inspired by reading the following interview:

When did you recognize your talent as an artist?
I drew on anything and everything since I could hold a pencil. My favorite Aunt Rae tells me that as a toddler, I drew pictures upside down and hand them to people right-side-up. I’ve never known life without some sort of art or craft.

I always wanted to be an artist “when I grew up.” I was raised by well-meaning professional parents who did everything they could to keep me out of art-- they did not want me to become a “starving” artist. I was discouraged on all levels, even choosing my electives in college— I was an English major and their dream for me was to be a good secretary (I was born in 1955.)

I was 46 years of age (November of 2000) when my pastor said to his congregation, “If you have a dream, and you’ve had it for a long time, it could be a dream that God gave you. I want to encourage you to follow your dreams.” When he said that, my heart just about jumped out of my chest— I’ve always wanted to paint and every time I visited a museum or gallery, there was something inside me telling me, “You can do this.” So, the next week I called a local museum and said, “I’m old, I don’t have time to mess around. Who’s your best teacher?” And I signed up for drawing and painting classes and began with drawing.

What is your favorite medium?
I LOVE oil paints! I love the smell, the buttery texture, the color brilliance.

Do you support yourself with your art? (Is it your vocation?)
Yes, I do support myself through my art, I paint full-time now since 2003. Some years are more difficult than others but I am very happy because I love to paint! My very first sale was my seventh painting, “Dance of the Sunflowers,” 15 x 20 inches, Oil on Canvas, $2000.00. I’ve actually sold most of my early paintings except my very first oil painting, a 5 x 7 loosely painted landscape.

Tell me about your process when starting a new painting?
In a nutshell:
(1) I begin with a blank white canvas or board
(2) sketch my subject lightly with pencil either by hand or by the use of an artograph
(3) spray fixative over my pencil sketches (otherwise the oil paints will just wipe the pencil away)
(4) Then I begin my underpainting... (see below)

I am a self-taught oil painter. Artists who have painted with me during the museum classes told me that I paint “wrong” which at first hurt my feelings. Then once I realized that I am unique, I embraced my different technique. I’ve come to learn that my intuitive, self-taught style of painting is called, “Indirect Painting.”

Indirect painting involves procedures in which the final effects in a picture are built up gradually by placing several layers of paint, one over the other, the upper layers modifying, but not altogether concealing, the lower layers.

I put my first strokes on the canvas with the expectation that I will paint over them again when they are dry in order to change their effect in some way. Therefore when I put on my first layer of paint, called the underpainting, I do not try for a finished effect, complete in final color, drawing definition, and pattern emphasis. Instead at the beginning of the work I concentrate on one or two of these problems, and I depend upon (and make allowance for) the subsequent layers of paint to develop and modify the underpainting until the remaining problems are finally solved.

Indirect methods of painting have been employed in the past by many artists including Van Eyck, El Greco, and Rembrandt. More recently such painters as Soutine, Modigliani, Rouault, Braque, and Paul Klee have utilized the optical effects of indirect processes.

Do you have a studio? Tell me about your workspace.
When I realized my gift for painting, and I had sold several paintings, I became convinced I could earn my living as a fine artist. I hired my brother, a carpenter, to come turn my 2-car garage into my painting studio. I had him add ledges all around the upper portion of the 2 side walls so that I can lean drying and finished canvases around the walls of my studio.

My easel is centered in the middle with a desk to my right where I arrange my palette of oils. I have a couch placed against the wall behind me for friends to come over and visit and watch me while I’m working. In front of me at an angle, I have a stereo and large T.V.-- In preparation for shows, I will often paint 10 to 16-hour days. I love to put the BBC Jane Austin movies on the T.V. Sometimes my friends will come over to both watch me paint and watch the Jane Austin movies and have a glass of wine.

My old graphic design table has found a new life in remaining a flat table for me to do my framing. I also have a large flat file to store paper palettes, sketches, sketch books, papers and clear bags for posters.

What do you do on a regular basis that keeps you inspired? What is your main inspiration?
My main inspiration is my love of God, people, nature and life itself. I tend to be the type person that is inspired by the most unusual things like the old rust formations found on old iron objects, watching the birds at our feeders, or simply observing the way the sun shines on objects and casts it’s shadows. My favorite quote to give on interviews: "Every morning is a fresh opportunity to find extraordinary joy in the most ordinary things. My art overflows out of this joy.”

Reading back over this answer, I am reminded of my abusive past and I delight in how far I’ve come. God allowed something beautiful to be born out of that which was meant for harm. Here is an article written by American Artist magazine about my Oil Painting: “Art that Heals: Camille Engel”

What artist (past or present) most influences your work?
Oh, wow, that is a tough question. I believe am influenced by every artist’s work I come into contact with, whether they are realists or not. I tend to share in their joy of their art... I delight in their creations. I love the Impressionists I see at the museums and will stare at a Monet for an extremely long time, absorbing his colors and his brush-strokes. Renior’s “Luncheon of the Boating Party” recently showed locally and I went back to the museum multiple times just to capture it to memory. I was transfixed by the size and colors (photos just don’t do it justice.) I am amazed at Van Eyck. I love the history and the work of Gustave Caillebotte. I simply love art!

What is your dream goal for the next 5 years--where will you be and what will you be doing?
(1) My dream goal would be to create art that would be recognized as important.
(2) To earn a significant living completely through my art.
(3) For my art to be acquired by museums and notable collectors.
(4) My ultimate dream is to experience a “sold-out” exhibition.

Where will you be and what will you be doing?
I will be painting at my easel, surrounded by people I love and who continue to love me.

What is the most encouraging advice you have received as an artist?
(1) As an artist: When my pastor said to his congregation, “If you have a dream, and you’ve had it for a long time, it could be a dream that God gave you. I want to encourage you to follow your dreams.”

(2) Also, In my search to earn a living through my art, I realized that I could earn a better living if I simplified my paintings, painted quick and sold cheap, but I didn’t enjoy the quicker process. I have a dedication to creating rich visual intricacies, and I revel in the painstaking details. My expertise is in the creating of intrinsic texture, depth and color that evoke emotion and draw a reaction from viewers... But creating detailed work takes time and I need to price my paintings to make the time involvement worth the effort.

As a professional artist: My husband encouraged me to relax and not try so hard to “earn a living.” Instead, work on developing my name and creating quality work. Locate the audience who can both appreciate and afford my gift for detail because my dedication to creating rich visual intricacies is what makes my paintings unique.

What is YOUR best advice to offer someone who wants to be an Artist?
Listen to your heart or your gut... Be true to your “voice,” follow your dreams, create art that you are passionate about if happiness is important to you.

For artists who want to earn a living with their art, I always tell them, “If I am not painting, I am marketing. If I am not marketing, I am painting. Being an artist is a lifestyle, not a job. I am completely, passionately absorbed in creating or searching for inspiration or marketing my art. I don’t even take a vacation that is not connected to my art.” (I am grateful to be married to a husband who is a complete and wonderful support.)

HELP others along the way... Don’t live a selfish life but learn to set healthy boundaries and say “no” when a request does not fit your personal goals. Don’t view other artists as competition, but as outside creative energy. You will be rewarded for living and teaching and helping others through your experience.

If you desire to earn a living with your art, you’ll need to be teachable and flexible, listen to your audience and your galleries, and pay attention to color trends. It is a rare artist who will be “discovered” so you need to market yourself, believe in yourself and do not give up no matter what others are saying. I’ve heard that only 1/10th of 1% of artists are earning a living completely through their art... I’ve never researched to know whether that statistic is true or not, but it sure seems to be true.

I believe that the most successful artists are those individuals who are passionate about the work they create and do not let any discouragement shake their belief in themselves as well as their belief in the art they are making. (And successful artists work many hours each day.)
